The two "Steal This Film"-films was put in the public domain by the Swedish site Pirate Bay who made it so they are the copyright-owners.

Oh, didn't realise it was K-otic who was posting.
With you're PD copyright knowledge you probably already knew this. Sorry.

mmhh well, Pirat Bay made this title to be in public domain from the start
what i said was, do you know of an movie that was made for the box office and for some reason put into the public domain by its copyright owner?

i´m asking because there so many funny stories on the internet about this .. but not a single producer/owner who actually say YES I/WE DID THAT

The truth of it is questionable, but I think I've read that Anton LaVay acquired the rights to Freaks, and then put it into the public domain.

Thats one of those obscure stories ...

It might be that Mr. LaVay was obsessed by this movie .. but there is no indication that he ever owned the copyright on it
On the other hand doing something so unique like putting a movie into public domain without telling anybody about it dosn´t make any sense at all (do good and talk about it)
There is only one source on the whole internet who is selling this story...
and last but not least ... being pd for about 20 years now without being recognized by any of the major pd distributors makes this story even more unbelievable
